Driven by an experimental and surrealist style, FLCL resists the tropes of coming-of-age stories, defying narrative logic and instead relying on impulse. Similarly, the animation itself played fast and loose with any kind of rules.

Naota Nandaba (ナンダバ・ナオ太, Nandaba Naota), is the 12-year old protagonist of the first season. His name is derived from the Japanese word for “honesty”. Unbeknownst to him, he has the “right kind of head” to be used as an N.O. channel, form of dimensional energy that seems to manifest through hormonal influxes.

Ninamori seems to have a crush on Naota, first indicated by playful teasing and jealousy towards Mamimi. In the third episode, she goes so far as to rig the votes just to have him cast as her co-star in the class play, and even confides the secret to him when they are alone.
