The Psicotools centre, one of the reference entities in terms of therapy and psychological assistance in Barcelona, is organising its Mindfulness workshop for lawyers at the beginning of 2020.

This initiative, entitled Workshop Mindfulness: Una altra forma de viure l’advocacia , will take place every Monday afternoon from February 10th to March 2nd, and on Tuesday March 10th, at the Col-legi de l’Advocacia in Barcelona.

What is the relationship between Mindfulness and the legal profession?

Mindfulness, which is sometimes translated as Mindfulness, is a psychotherapeutic practice inspired by vipassana meditation, although it is devoid of all the religious and mystical connotations of this millennial tradition and has been standardized and thought out so that its effects are easily investigated by the scientific community.

Since its development during the second half of the 20th century, Mindfulness has been applied to many contexts beyond the classical and psychotherapy fields, and in many of them benefits for its practitioners have been observed. One such context is the world of work, which is linked to organizations working in highly competitive environments and whose workers are often exposed to stress. Mindfulness serves, among other things, to manage high levels of stress and facilitate the task of focusing on finding practical solutions and achieving goals.

This makes Mindfulness interesting in the world of law, given that anxiety and excess stress are the second most frequent health problem among lawyers , according to the First Study on Pathologies and Injuries of Lawyers in Spain carried out by the Foundation Institute of Research Applied to Law. In addition, a report published by Iberian Lawyer in 2018 states, based on survey-based research, that anxiety is the most frequent psychological health problem among lawyers.

This kind of evidence on the psychological wear associated with the legal profession reflects the complexity of the profession, always subject to change and the ability to adapt to novelty. Fortunately, Mindfulness is a very practical tool to face the challenges of everyday work from a constructive mindset. Furthermore, once its theoretical and practical foundations have been learned, it is easy to use in a wide variety of situations without the need for assistance. That’s why many companies organize Mindfulness in company courses and workshops.

Advantages and beneficial effects at work

Among the advantages that Minfulness brings to professional performance, the following stand out

  • It counteracts the effects of anxiety peaks produced by certain experiences in the profession.
  • It increases the ability to concentrate on the task without falling into rumination.
  • It encourages having a global vision of the problem, and not focusing only on its individual parts.
